Inclusion Comes Naturally

We love our local library and go there often. One day, while everybody came out of story time, this happened. It just made it so clear to me that prejudice is a learned behavior. Children readily accept physical differences as long as no one has made it seem like they shouldn't.

In general, I feel very lucky that in our corner of Oregon we have yet to encounter gross prejudice. Sure, we get people who smile uncomfortably or are a little condescending in their friendliness, but at least they are all positive. I've yet to encounter really negative reactions to Malachi.

Not that long ago I watched a great movie called Music Within, which was in part about a man with cerebral palsy who lived in Portland. It really shown a light on how bad the discrimination was just a few decades ago.

We still have a long way to go, but I think this generation is off to a great start.
