So hilarious! Baby has extreme reaction to nursery rhyme

So hilarious. I have no idea why he hates this song. from Shasta Kearns Moore on Vimeo.

I finally found a box full of my old children's books in my in-law's garage a few weeks ago. One of them was "Ten in a Bed." My husband and I started reading and singing the song and around "there were eight in a bed" we realized that Malachi was really upset. We had never sung together, so he tried singing alone. Nope. Then I tried. Nope.

Eventually we just had to read the book in a monotone to get through it.

The next morning at breakfast, I quietly sang "roll over, roll over," to see how Malachi would react. At first I thought he wouldn't do anything, but sure enough after a second of silence he looked at me with those big doughy eyes and stuck out his bottom lip.

I vowed I wouldn't sing it again, but I just had to catch his reaction on video. Too funny!

I can't imagine why he hates this song. This might be over-analyzing it, but part of me wonders if it's because of the words "roll over" and the fact that he can't, despite our daily encouragements....

In any event, he seriously hates it, so we'll have to stop singing it around him. (Even when I played back this video around him he got sad again.)

Now, if we can only keep that darned song from getting stuck in our heads!

  1. I think you are right: It's because he wants to and can't! So stop torturing that poor baby lol!! It was like watching a horror movie, where you yell at the teanage girl "Don't open that door!!" my hubby and I kept saying, "Don't believe the twinkle twinkle, baby, she's going to say roll over any second!" And then you would, and then he got all sad! Poor poor little guy! I think you owe him an icecream now. ; )

    1. LOL, I didn't think about that. It's totally a horror movie. The "roll over" chorus is even a little "dun-dun-dun!" sounding. ...if that makes any sense.

  2. Oh my god. That is what i needed to end my night on a good note. He is so frickin' cute! Coincidentally, Parker has a big lower lip thing he does too. He has done it ever since he was a baby any time he is upset. The lip lets us know he is about to lose it! :)

  3. The lower lip thing is so weird! He's done it since he was itsy-bitsy. It's really instinctual; I certainly never did it to him!

  5. My little guy hates the hungry caterpillar book! He will pout and now simply crawl away! He loves almost all the other books, but this one he despises. Why?

  6. That's funny. Jaden developed an extreme aversion to the guy who isn't Sam I Am in Green Eggs and Ham. We've had to stop reading that book because every time that dude's face comes up he freaks out. Hmm.... another Internet video prospect?

Since Malachi sits and listens more than his brother, he really may understand more. Benjamin has always been extraordinary in his comprehension. By the time he was 3 he was understanding the humor in first and second grade readers, not reading it, just understanding it.

The song I used as encouragement when Ben was small was from the old Santa story where Winter Warlock is told to put "one foot in front of the other, and soon you'll be walking out the door."

Keep up the good work and stay in tune with things like this song upsetting Malachi!

  9. When I watched the video I couldn't believe his response. It would be interesting to see if it's a response to him not being able to roll over.

My son has the same reaction to hip hip hooray (we found out when he turned 1). Very endearing! I love reading your blog by the way.

  11. My son (2, also with CP) hates the 5 Little Speckled Frogs song. He pickets his lips and wrinkles his nose... And his nanny made almost the exact same video as you did! So hilarious!!

That is the cutest thing! II found you blog actually just google searching the annoyance of people asking if my boy/girl twins are identical, and it pulled your post about people at the grocery store. Well, I read that, and now I've spent hours reading everything. I really enjoy reading about your boys. they are both truly beautiful!
